Linux user profile to your Google Identity. However, in Qwiklabs, the generated usernames (like student_01_..._qwiklabs) are often long or contain characters that trigger that Malformed passwd entry bug in the Guest Agent. By setting enable-oslogin=FALSE, you force the VM to use the Legacy Metadata method: 1. gcloud pushes your public key to the VM's metadata. 2. The google-guest-agent (which we saw is running) sees the key. 3. It creates a local user and puts the key in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys.

somehow one of machines didnt work ping, couldnt ssh via tunnel also, debugging showed everything ok
