The python main.py script has a hardcoded port of 8080, and I ran into an issue of the Dockerfile not overriding this. I'm not familiar with gunicorn but I had to explicitly change the hardcoded 8080 to 80 just to get this to run in GCE at port 80 to pass the checkpoint within this lab.
