Something went wrong somewhere along the way. The problem with the lab is that it does not provide you with confirmation of where you should be. ie, it says "DO THIS", but there is no confirmation of what you should then see... then it will say "EXECUTE THIS..." but again, no idea if you had successful execution or not. Around 1/2 or 2/3 of the way through the lab, the responses I was getting from SSH were incomprehensible relative to the lab instructions.
